SEO Expert Vanessa Fox on What Startups Should Be Doing Now
Vanessa Fox is known as one of the country’s foremost experts in customer acquisition from organic search. She created Google’s Webmaster Central, which provides both tools and community to help website owners improve their sites to gain more customers from search and was instrumental in the sitemaps.org alliance of Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft Live Search. She runs her own company Nine By Blue and she just released a book, Marketing in the Age of Google.
Since search is such an important part of online business we asked Vanessa to speak at Deploy 2010, a conference for technologists designed to empower you with the technology know-how to make your startup a success.
TM Blog: Vanessa Fox: Marketing in the Age of Google
In a world where Google has become synonymous with search, businesses will need to learn how to use this in their marketing strategies. More and more consumers are finding their way to the web in hope of finding what they are looking for. Whether it is a new digital camera or the latest news stories, the internet has become the gatekeeper of information. As businesses start to catch on to the ways their consumers are finding their and their competitive services. The more they must realize the value of having a presence on the web and getting the consumer to their site.
Oreilly: What You Need To Know About Local Search
Online attention doesn’t mean much if you can’t convert it into something else: advertising revenue, event attendance, product purchases — whatever is most important to your specific business. This is particularly true with local search, where the combination of targeted queries, fast results and geographic proximity give merchants a great shot at serving customers.
Search expert Vanessa Fox has been following and shaping the search landscape for years, so I asked her recently for a handful of local search best practices. She’ll be expanding on many of these same points in her upcoming presentation at the Where 2.0 Conference.
Calcalist Interview
One of the most interesting commercials aired during the Super Bowl game last held in early February, it was a network of fashion Dokrs. Advertisement offered viewers to enter the lottery, which will be distributed for free thousands of pairs of khaki pants. The response was in accordance with: the millions of surfers sat at the computer, went to Google and searched “Free Dockers Pants”. Only one thing they did not find – the site that will allow them to enter the lottery.

Google Sitemaps Team Interview
Google Sitemaps was launched in June 2005 to enhance Google’s Web crawling process in cooperation with Webmasters and site owners. Collaborative crawling takes Webmasters into the boat to some degree, and both sides did learn a lot from each other in the last months. Google’s Sitemaps Team does listen to Joe Webmaster’s needs, questions, and suggestions. They have implemented a lot of very useful features based on suggestions in the Google Sitemaps Group, an open forum where members of the Sitemaps team communicate with their users, handing out technical advice even on weekends. The nickname Google Employee used by the Sitemaps team makes it regularly on the list of This month’s top posters.

Marketing Should Be About “And” Rather Than “Or”
You’ll often notice than when a new web service or marketing strategy gets starts getting some buzz, it will often be referred to as a “_____ killer”, when in most cases this turns out to be greatly exaggerated or just plain wrong. For marketers, it’s important not to get too caught up in this kind of mentality, because as long as you have an audience and they can still be reached through some channel, that channel is alive and well.

WebPro News: Nathan and Vanessa Discuss the Upcoming O’Reilly Found Conference
These great minds have come together on two projects geared toward developers. JaneandRobot.com is a site they created that discusses the fundamentals of search engine optimization from a web developer’s perspective.
The second is the O’Reilly Found Conference. With this event, Vanessa and Nathan hope to change the historical idea that search is a marketing activity since it is now just as critical to technical architecture. The target audience for the conference is designers, IT professionals, and entrepreneurs.
Most of the search conferences such as SMX and SES focus primarily on the marketing angle of search. Marketers go home and pitch all their new ideas to their IT departments who have trouble believing the changes are necessary. Vanessa and Nathan want to help bridge that communication gap and allow the marketing and the IT departments work together.
In the above WPN video, Nathan gives a couple of examples of the type of issues that will be addressed at the conference.
CrankyGeeks with John Dvorak
The basis for Google page-ranking is to equate popularity with quality, and once you look at the information developed by SEO experts, you learn that this strategy barely works, I [John Dvorak] argued in a recent column. I suggest rethinking the basic organization of the Web itself. Vanessa thinks differently.

Social media has taken over. Companies now realize how powerful it is for raising brand awareness and engaging with customers. But a lot of money can be lost if a social media campaign is not efficiently conducted.
