The points you make about the advantages and disadvantages of ccTLDs are spot on. No solution is perfect, and there are usually plenty of things you can do to overcome obstacles if you cannot use a TLD. I've found the biggest challenges involve a domain that targets a region that shares a language (for example: using a non-ccTLD domain hosted in the US to target searchers in South America). When a site like that is not hosted in one of the countries in the region, it can be tough to establish that country/language association. Excellent article.
